WEST CHESTER TWP. —

The University of Phoenix has announced it will close more than 100 locations, impacting about 204 students enrolled at its West Chester Twp. campus.

“We are phasing out the Cincinnati campus in West Chester,” said Tanya Flynn, spokeswoman for University of Phoenix, which is owned by Apollo Group, Inc. “Current students can finish either at the facility, at a nearby facility or online.”

Flynn said there are 204 students enrolled at the West Chester campus, which opened in 2003 on Centre Pointe Drive.

The nationwide closures will leave the University of Phoenix with 112 locations throughout 36 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. A total of 13,000 students will be impacted, which is 4 percent of total degreed enrollment, according to Apollo Group.

The closures include 115 locations — comprising 25 campuses and 90 learning and student resource centers, which are generally smaller satellite locations, according to Apollo Group.

“The vast majority of students are going online to get their degree, and this is in response to that,” Flynn said.

University of Phoenix will continue to enroll students in Ohio, but mostly online. The University of Phoenix Beachwood Learning Center near Cleveland will remain open.

University of Phoenix offers programs for Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. Total student enrollment is more than 300,000.

Apollo Group, Inc. announced the closures Oct. 16, along with falling enrollment and revenue figures. In fiscal year 2012, University of Phoenix’s average degreed enrollment decreased 14.8 percent as compared to fiscal year 2011.

That decreased enrollment translates to a 10.2 percent drop in net revenue for University of Phoenix.

In total, Apollo Group, Inc. reported net revenue of $4.3 billion for fiscal year 2012 — a 9.7 percent decrease compared to fiscal year 2011.

“The decrease was due principally to lower University of Phoenix enrollment, partially offset by selective tuition price and other fee changes,” according to Apollo Group.

Along with closing 115 locations, Apollo Group has also begun implementing a workforce reduction of about 800 employees, including faculty, during fiscal year 2013, according to the company.

Email notices have been sent to West Chester campus students, and graduation advisers will also be making phone calls, Flynn said.

Local students with questions can call the student hotline at (866) 992-3302.
