FAIRFIELD —

A teen was killed late Saturday night when two unidentified men, one of them armed with a handgun, entered a house and demanded money, police said.

One of the intruders shot 19-year-old Julian Slaven just before 10:25 p.m. at his home in the 5800 block of Judy Drive before both suspects fled the cul-de-sac in a light-colored car, according to Officer Doug Day of the Fairfield Police Department.

One suspect is described as a white male and the other as a black male.

“They were wearing some sort of covering on their face. We’re not sure what it was,” Day said.

Slaven was pronounced dead at the scene by the Butler County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

The shooting was not random, Day said, adding that they believe the suspects were specifically after Slaven.

“They went there demanding money. It’s not the type of place, it’s not the type of house where you’re going to kick the door in and go demanding money unless you know it’s there.”

A Facebook group commemorating Slaven identifies him as a rapper on the local music scene, using the name “J. Kaptum.”

Police had had contact with Slaven, but “typically for minor stuff,” Day said. Records show that Slaven had three criminal cases, cases in Fairfield Municipal Court this year and last, each for drug-related charges.

Julian Slaven’s mother, Tamera Slaven, and a family friend were at home during the incident and dialed 911, Day said. Slaven is a teacher at Riverview Elementary in the Hamilton City Schools district, according to Joni Copas, the district’s spokeswoman.

Day said police are working to determine how the two men entered the residence.

“All we know is they got into the home and they weren’t invited,” he said.

Both suspects remain at large, police said.

Neighbor Brian Bulton, 23, said he noticed that numerous people would briefly visited Slaven’s residence, then leave.

“That house had a lot of traffic in the first place,” Bulton said. “A lot more at night. It’s hard to say (how many) but it’s more than normal.”

Neighbor Danielle Bertrand, 23, said the situation was “definitely heartbreaking.”

“I feel terrible for his mother,” Bertrand said. “The whole thing is really sad.”

Those with information regarding this incident should call Fairfield police at (513) 829-8201 or Crimestoppers at (513) 352-3040.
