ST. CLAIR TWP. —

A teenager is behind bars and is facing a felony charge for allegedly making violent threats Friday toward other Edgewood High School students through a social media website, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office.

The 17-year old boy made threats on his Twitter account about violence toward the school located on Busenbark Road, involving assault rifles, shotguns and explosives, according to Lt. Mike Craft.

Two 17-year-old boys responded with “tweets” of encouragement, which also landed them in trouble with the law.

The 17-year-old who “tweeted” the threat is charged with making terrorists threats, inducing panic and menacing. He is housed in the Butler County Juvenile Detention Center. The other two teens were cited for menacing and released to their parents.

“It was a pretty serious threat,” Craft said. He added the “tweets” contained reference to some recent tragedies involving mass shootings.

Detectives found two of the boys at school and one at home. They searched all three residences and a car, but found no weapons. There is no indication the teens had possession of or access to the types of weapons mentioned in the threats, according to detectives.

John Thomas, spokesman for the district, said the district received an anonymous call about 7:30 a.m. Friday that threats had been made toward the district.

“There was no threat about today (Friday), so they did not have to lock down any buildings,” Thomas said. “We took all necessary steps to insure the safety of students, which is always our number one concern.”

There was no imminent threat to the student body and the investigation was turned over to the sheriff’s office, he added.

“In today society comments or threats of violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances and violators will be arrested and criminally charged to the maximum degree of the law,” said Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.
