A family that lives on Kalbfeisch Road will stay at the Days Inn on Commerce Road as they move on from an early Wednesday morning fire.

Crystal Smith, a resident and daughter of the homeowner at 6341 Kalbfeisch Road, said they didn’t know their house was on fire when around 6:30 a.m. a passerby “knocked on our door telling us to get out.”

Flames shot from the middle of the one-story house, she said. Fire crews from the Madison Twp. fire department told her the source of the fire was a stove pipe.

“It was all contained in that location,” Smith said, shivering after being in the cold for five hours and pointing to the center of the house near the garage.

“Two bedrooms are fine, but everything else is gone,” she said.

Smith said they were able to salvage some items from the house.

The American Red Cross is assisting the family.
