Ohio AG DeWine making crime lab his No. 1 priority

DAYTON — State Attorney General Mike DeWine told a gathering of local law enforcement his No. 1 priority was to cut down the time needed to test evidence by the state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation.

Speaking to the Montgomery County Association of Police Chiefs, DeWine said Wednesday it takes 127 days for DNA evidence to be processed by BCI’s crime lab. “The quality is good, but the delays are horrendous,” he said. “We going to fix it.”

Despite a 6 percent cut to the attorney general’s budget, DeWine told the chiefs he would shift his resources to put more money into technology and personnel to speed up the lab’s work.
