A 25-year-old Ross High School graduate was critically injured this past weekend in Afghanistan when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while clearing roads.
Staff Sgt. Sam Shockley, an engineer in IED detection, was walking in front of a personnel carrier on the roadside when he triggered the explosive device, according to his brother Chris Bushelman. Shockley lost parts of both of his legs and three fingers on his right hand, Bushelman said Wednesday.
Shockley will be receiving treatment in Germany for two more weeks before being transferred to San Antonio or to Walter Reed Hospital, his brother said. Bushelman said family members were able to speak with Shockley before his surgery and he seemed to be in “good spirits” despite being heavily medicated.
Bushelman described Shockley, a 2006 Ross High School graduate, as a “good kid and very bright.” He said this was Shockley’s fourth tour in Afghanistan and his second enlistment in the U.S. Army. Bushelman said Shockley “enjoyed being in the Army,” but this was to be his last tour.
Shockley is the son of Bobbie Collins of Hamilton and John Shockley of Dayton.
