MIDDLETOWN —

The Kwik and Kold that caught fire late Sunday night is a total loss, fire officials said, but it could be another week before investigators are able to determine a cause.

“The building is not stable enough for me to get in and do any type of investigation,” said Middletown Fire Marshal Bob Hess.

Crews were dispatched at 10:39 p.m. Sunday for a fire at the drive-through at 1809 S. University Blvd., which is in front of the Save A Lot grocery store off McCurry Court.

First responders arrived to flames shooting from the rear of the building and immediately called for assistance, Hess said.

Monroe and Franklin fire departments responded, and seven to 10 additional Middletown firefighters were called in to assist the 16 that were already on duty.

“We had about 40 or 50 people here,” Hess said. “Crews attempted to do an interior attack, but the roof started to collapse and crews backed out.”

Crews cleared the scene around 4 a.m. today, he said.

The building sustained about $150,000 worth of damage. The estimated damage of inside contents destroyed in the fire is $125,0000.

The value of the building and land is around $79,700, according to the Butler County Auditor’s Office website. The building is owned by Haus University LLC of Springboro, which purchased it in May 2005. A sale price was not released to the auditor’s office.
