MIDDLETOWN —

A 40-year-old man is charged with sexually assaulting a 5-year-old boy.

Police have arrested Thomas Robinson, of Middletown, for allegedly forcing the boy to perform oral sex on him. Police say he also sodomized the boy.

Lt. Scott Reeve said the initial complaint was that a child had assaulted another in school.

“When there’s a situation where one child is acting more sexually aware than they should, we’ll investigate,” he said.

Reeve said the alleged victim of Robinson was the child acting inappropriately at school.

In May, officers were notified by Butler County Children Services of a possible sex offense involving a boy and Robinson. Reeve said at the time an arrest could not be made, but the investigation has now been reopened.

“It looks like he (Robinson) has a pattern of doing that now,” he said.

Robinson was arraigned Friday morning in Middletown Municipal Court on one count of rape, a first-degree felony. Public defender Patrick McKnight has been assigned to represent Robinson and is set to reappear in court at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 15.

Robinson has been in and out of Middletown Municipal Court several times since 1995. Most of his charges had been traffic-related, but he had a domestic violence charge in 1998, where he served 30 days in jail, according to court records.

His bond was set Friday morning at $100,000 and remains in Middletown City Jail.
