Woman gets prison for faking teen daughter’s death

RICHMOND, Ind. —

A woman has been sentenced to prison for faking the death of her teenage daughter and conducting a funeral where she attempted to collect donations.

Angela Boyd, 40, now of Louisville, Ky., organized a funeral at New Life Church of the Nazarene in Richmond, Ind. Boyd’s brother, Brian LaMaster, figured out the hoax and blew the whistle at the funeral, which happened in 2010, according to reports.

Boyd said her then 15-year-old daughter was brutally raped and murdered by the child’s father in Iowa. The funeral included a eulogy from Boyd. A collection was taken during the service, and before Boyd could accept the collection money, LaMaster told those in attendance he had checked and the daughter was fine.

Boyd fled the funeral and later turned herself in to Richmond police.

Boyd was sentenced to 180 days in prison for attempted theft and four years of probation for writing bad checks. The judge agreed to the plea agreement, saying Boyd has since turned her life around.
