Traffic tips for inclement weather

Tips for driving in inclement or slick weather, which is expected on Thursday, from Sgt. Mark Bowron, WHIO traffic reporter:

  • It's important to drive at what Bowron calls "speed reasonable for the conditions."
  • Provide extra driving time. This can be difficult as part of the daily routine, but it's important to be sure slower speeds possible.
  • When possible, avoid bridges, overpasses and on- and off-ramps, which can ice over faster than other roads.
  • If traction is lost, steer in the direction of the slide.
  • Before leaving, be sure there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the vehicle to help clean precipitation as well as road-treatment materials that might splatter onto the windshield.
  • Listen for updates on road conditions or traffic slow-downs to plan routes accordingly.
