Today’s showers could cause high water issues

Widespread rain showers expected in today’s forecast will likely result in some high water issues, according to a weather alert issued by the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Local meteorologists expect up to two inches of rainfall by tonight.

The rain that fell during Tuesday’s early commute followed the 40 mph wind gusts that accompanied a tornado watch for most of the region Monday. Little damage was reported.

The watch, which expired at 8 p.m. Monday, covered Allen, Auglaize, Clark, Champaign, Butler, Darke, Greene, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, Shelby and Van Wert counties.

WHIO-TV meteorologist Rich Wirdzek said Monday that the rest of the week should be calmer with only a slight chance of showers through Wednesday morning. The area south of Interstate 70 has the best chance for rain tonight. The rest of the week will be partly cloudy to clear.

“(Today) will still be a bit breezy, but not windy like (Monday),” he said. Today is also expected to be cooler, with highs in the 50s.

Wirdzek said it is not unusual to get a tornado watch or warning in November. “We usually get one big severe weather event each fall,” he said. “One of the area’s most violent tornadoes happened in November (in Van Wert in 2002).”

The weather will continue to be cool through midweek, with a high near 50 degrees on Wednesday and in the mid-40s on Thursday. The high will be back near 50 on Friday, Wirdzek said.
