2 to 3 inches of snow expected for region

SOUTHWEST OHIO —

Snow started falling late Friday night as part of a storm moving up from the south.

The Miami Valley area is under a winter weather advisory and southern counties Butler, Warren and Clinton are under a winter storm warning until 1 p.m. Saturday.

A light snowfall is expected to continue into the overnight. News Center 7 Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek said everyone will get some snow, with accumulations of 2 to 3 inches possible across much of the area, and as much as 4 inches possible south of Dayton.

Wirdzek said the wind will not be an issue as it was during the blizzard conditions earlier in the week.

As of 7:30 a.m. Saturday Mercer County is under a Level 1 Snow Emergency.

Wirdzek said more snow could fall Saturday afternoon but rising temperatures should make travel less problematic.

Mandi Abner, of the Ohio Department of Transportation, said crews worked ahead of the snowfall, pretreating road salt brine and inspecting snow plows so trucks are ready when needed.

The salt brine — a mixture of salt and water mixed in a special machine — is intended to keep the snow from sticking to the roadways.

“A lot of time, motorists will see those white stripes on the pavement,” Abner said. “That’s the salt brine.”

Clouds are expected to move in on New Year’s Eve. Light snow could come late in the day and may mix with raindrops to the far south. Highs are expected to be in the low 30s.

Light snow is still possible through Monday night, which could cause slick roads and light accumulation.
