Interim Fenwick principal outlines initiatives

Trevor Block is the interim principal for Fenwick High School’s for this upcoming school year, but he has several initiatives that he hopes to implement while he’s there.

“We’ve got three main goals for this upcoming school year,” Block said. “The first has to do with communication. We’re in the process of redesigning and implementing a new school website. The primary purpose of the new site is to give us an easier way for us to reach the Bishop Fenwick community.

“We’re also looking into ways that we can be proactive in dealing with the subject of bullying,” he said.

Block spent the past two years as the school’s vice principal for academics. He hopes the new website will be up and running by mid-September.

He would like to also expand and renovate the school’s existing science lab.

“We’re in the initial stages of undertaking that project,” he said. With a new and improved science laboratory, Fenwick will eventually be able to offer advanced placement classes in biology and chemistry.

“I’d also like to further emphasize leadership development within our faculty and staff. We have two teachers attending a leadership seminar at Notre Dame right now. I hope to continue with professional development of our teachers and staff to ensure that they have all the skills necessary for their development.”

His third goal is to utilize the abilities of the school’s 545 students through the campus ministry.

“We have students who help the homeless, who work in area hospitals as volunteers and who tutor kids in the area. We hope to expand the reach of those things by providing service in the towns within the Fenwick community, like Mason, Lebanon, West Chester and Springboro.”

Block is taking over as Fenwick’s principal this school year. He replaces Michael Miller, who resigned in mid-June amid accusations of misconduct during the school’s May 11 prom and at other school events, school officials said.

Jim Rigg, the superintendent for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, said Block will serve as interim principal while a search begins in the fall.

“Most principal searches take place much earlier in the calendar year (typically in the months of February or March),” Rigg said in an email. “We were concerned that we would not be able to take advantage of a robust pool of potential candidates if we conducted a search in June. ... Our intention is to name the principal by mid-spring of 2013.”

Rigg said Block’s ideas fit in with the archdiocese’s Vision for Catholic Schools, a plan the archdiocese has not made public yet, but will announce in the near future.

“There’s good positive momentum that we’ve established at this school over the past two years,” Block said. “I feel everyone is well prepared and the feeling is very positive. I’m ready to get the school year started.”
