Lebanon considers $19,000 in donations to civic organizations

By Denise G. Callahan

LEBANON —

The Lebanon City Council is poised to pass legislation that allots $19,000 to civic organizations, some of whom will get increases over last year.

The donation of taxpayer money has been debated on council in years past, with members carrying negotiations out over weeks and even months. Last year the city gave six organizations who requested funds $3,000 a piece. The donations have also dropped in recent years — the council approved $40,000 in 2009 and $33,000 in 2010.

Only four members were at the Monday work session and all came to a consensus the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce will get the biggest donation at $6,000, because it organizes the annual Horse and Carriage Parade that has flooded the city streets and businesses with upwards of 100,000 people. This past holiday season, organizers estimated the event may have doubled the usual number.

“This last event was incredible,” Councilman Jim Norris said. “This is not a reward for that, it merits that.”

Historic Downtown Lebanon, Inc. is penciled in for $5,000. Applefest and the Optimist Club, which puts on Blues Fest, were allotted $3,000 each. The Lebanon Rotary Club is slated to receive $2,000 to help with the city’s newest event, the Lebanon Country Music Festival.

Other organizations, like the Warren County Historical Society, the Lebanon Theater Company and Humane Association of Warren County, will receive utility service credits. The organizations receiving cash will also receive police and other city services for free for their events.

The measure comes up for a vote at the city council next week when absent city council members Jeff Monroe, Mark Messer and Matt Rodriguez will have an opportunity to weigh in.
