FAIRFIELD —

Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison, a Middletown native who last year won America’s first gold medal in judo, will appear at an Olympic kickoff event Feb. 7 at Fairfield’s Liberty Mutual Office.

That date marks one year before the start of the winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Harrison will appear at the Fairfield office to drum up excitement for the event, said Miles Ritenour, a spokesman for Ketchum Sports and entertainment, which is coordinating the local visit.

“Liberty is a U.S. Olympic Committee Sponsor, and they’re holding these events all around the country with Olympians from their area to kick off the sponsorship,” Ritenour said.

Harrison will discuss her Olympic journey during the 2012 London games, her outlook on the winter games in Sochi, and her partnership with Liberty Mutual Insurance.

Harrison’s victory last year made her the second gold medalist from Middletown after Jerry Lucas, who won his gold medal in basketball in 1960. The two appeared together at Middletown celebrations last fall. Signs in the city designate Middletown as their home. Harrison now lives in the Boston area. Her fiance, Aaron Henry, 29, is a 2001 Fairfield High School graduate and firefighter.
