Teen enters not guilty plea in Father’s Day fatal stabbing

By Lauren Pack, Staff Writer

A teen accused of killing his stepfather on Father’s Day pleaded not guilty today during an arraignment on the charge of murder.

Bond for Michael K. Ray, 18, was set at $500,000 by Butler County Common Pleas Judge Michael Sage who also set Oct. 15 as the trial date.

Ray was indicted by a Butler County grand jury last week for the stabbing death of his stepfather, Bryan K. Schmidt, 36, on June 17 in their Weeping Willow Drive home in St. Clair Twp. Ray told sheriff deputies he “did it” when they arrived on the scene of the stabbing, according to police reports.

Public defenders Gregory Beane and Scott Bissell were appointed to represent Ray, a recent Edgewood High School graduate.

Family members attended the arraignment and Ray’s grandmother yelled “Love you, Mikey,” as he was lead from the courtroom, according to Local12, our news partners. He replied, “Love you, too.”
