FRANKLIN TWP., Warren County — A nationwide manhunt ended in Franklin Twp. today when Warren County Sheriff’s deputies apprehended an escapee out of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office in Florida.

Rondell Junior Reed, 52 — who was awaiting trial in Florida for first-degree murder — escaped with another inmate on Oct. 24. Their red jail jumpsuits were discovered in a service area of the facility. The other inmate was captured shortly after escaping. Reed, formerly of Indiana, had been able to elude authorities until this morning.

About 1:50 a.m., deputies attempted to stop a suspected impaired driver operating a Lincoln MKX with Georgia plates, on northbound Interstate 75 near the 40 mile post, in Franklin Twp. Minutes prior to Deputy Trent Barker locating the vehicle, the Warren County Communications Center had advised that the vehicle was entered stolen out of Georgia, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Barker pursued the vehicle southbound on I-75 at speeds reaching 100 mph. The suspect attempted to exit the interstate at Ohio 63 in Monroe, but crashed into a pole. He was arrested without further incident, according to the sheriff’s office.

Reed is being held in the Warren County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Franklin Municipal Court.

Georgia officials were notified of Reed’s arrest.

Deputy Jeff Luther, director of government affairs and media relations for the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office, said two of their deputies would be arriving in Warren County late Saturday to meet with local law enforcement and to interview Reed.

“He has a lengthy history of violent crime,” Luther said.

Reed is accused of killing Jim Malone, who was shot behind his business on April 16. Indiana police arrested Reed several days after the shooting, after he crashed while fleeing in a Corvette stolen from Malone’s automotive shop, according to police.

The incident in Florida also wasn’t the first time Reed escaped from jail. He also escaped from a North Carolina prison in 1989, where he was serving time on a larceny charge, according to police.
