NEW MIAMI — Charges have been filed against a man and woman involved in a hit-skip crash that injured a New Miami officer Tuesday morning, police said.

The incident occurred about 10:55 a.m. between Hamilton and New Miami on U.S. 127 south.

After talking to the driver of a pickup truck that he pulled over, Officer Pat Fackey, 31, was sitting in his parked cruiser writing a ticket when a white Nissan slammed into the back end. The Nissan went around the pickup and down an embankment toward the Great Miami River, according to officials.

William Capehart-Gidney, 24, the driver of the truck, jumped out to check on Fackey, who had already called for help. Then he approached the Nissan and found it empty.

“I was surprised there was no one in the car,” said Capehart-Gidney.

Fackey was taken to The Fort Hamilton Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, according Sgt. Monte Mayer, Butler County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.

Fackey was treated and released, according to hospital officials.

The occupants of the Nissan tried to flee the scene on foot, but were stopped by deputies near the crash location, authorities said. The occupants reportedly took the license plates off the car as they fled the crash scene.

Jake Cordero, 20, was the driver, and his passenger was 30-year-old Layna Carpenter. Both are from Hamilton and were interviewed by deputies at the scene.

Cordero was taken to Fort Hamilton for a medical assessment prior to being taken to the sheriff’s office for further questioning. Carpenter refused medical treatment and was also detained for questioning.

Cordero is facing felony charges of leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence. He also faces misdemeanor charges of driving under suspension, failure to move over for a stationary public safety vehicle and obstruction of official business.

Carpenter is being held on a contempt of court warrant from Hamilton Municipal Court. Mayer said Carpenter is not facing any charges as a result of the accident.

The Butler County Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team is continuing its investigation of the crash.
