Commissioners OK $50K contract to move law library

By Lauren Pack

One of the first pieces of a cost-saving plan to end leases for some county offices and move them into underutilized or empty floors of the Government Services Center in Hamilton is slated to happen early next year.

The Butler County Law Library is scheduled to moved from its current leased location in the Robinson-Schwenn Building on Journal Square to the seventh floor of county’s headquarters in the first quarter of 2013. Savings of the relocation is estimated to be $95,000 annually.

On Thursday, the county commissioners approved a contract for $50,000 with Ray Hamilton Company to provide moving services for the law library relocation.

Joe Hodnicki, law library director, said moving to the Government Service Center is a good decision. While his preference would have been to move into a first floor location for ease of access, the seventh floor is also a good location.

Currently the law library is decreasing its size in the Robinson-Schwenn Building to accommodate a new tenant. Some furniture has been moved to the government services building’s ninth floor for storage until the seventh floor is ready for occupation.

County Administrator Charles Young said the county is still assessing the needs of the law library, including a floor plan and structural needs to support shelving and books.
