Broad Street Monster Bash planned downtown

MIDDLETOWN —

Organizers of the city’s Broad Street Bash hope to recreate the popular event’s success in the fall.

The inaugural Broad Street Monster Bash — a 5K run/1-mile walk and concert — is set for Oct. 20 in downtown Middletown. The event is being organized by Broad Street Bash and Downtown Middletown Inc., along with help from local businesses and the YMCA.

“We wanted to have some type of event in the fall,” said Patrick Kay, executive director of Downtown Middletown Inc. “The more we can do in downtown the better. We want people to know that downtown is here and things are happening.”

Adrian Scherer, co-organizer of the Broad Street Bash, wanted to do one more concert now that the summer concert series had ended.

“We decided to organize something brand, brand new (with DMI), but is something we already do,” she said.

The Monster Bash will start out with a 5K run, which Scherer hopes 100 to 200 runners will participate, and a 1-mile walk. The male and female winners of the 5K will receive prizes.

The finish line will be at Central Avenue and Broad Street, where a concert featuring Adrienne Rose, 13 Stares and Inspector 12 will commence. The event will be from 5 to 11 p.m.

People will see the normal fare at the concert — food vendors and adult beverages — plus tents with heaters and a cauldron bubbling with warm cider.

There will also be a costume contest with cash prizes. The categories include best group dressing in a theme, scariest costume, most original costume, and best zombie costume.

“We want there to be lots of zombie sightings,” Scherer said.

Scherer said she’d like to see more events in downtown Middletown.

“I think that with the constant changing of the landscape of downtown, the more times people see it and go, ‘Hey that’s different,’ that’s good for the city,” she said. “I honestly think Middletown is getting to be known pretty quickly as a place to go because we’ve got things happening pretty frequently. It’s all about restructuring the economy of downtown Middletown.”
