Atrium Medical expanding community outreach

MIDDLETOWN —

Atrium Medical Center hasn’t attracted the same attention recently for building projects as other hospitals serving Butler County have.

But that doesn’t mean the hospital isn’t busy.

The Middletown hospital opened at the end of 2007 in new facilities on a 200-acre campus. Previously Middletown Regional Hospital was on McKnight Drive. The new campus is situated next to the city’s Interstate 75 interchange, with the hospital investing in new equipment and technologies at the time it moved.

Local residents should notice, if they haven’t already, more outreach in the community from Atrium Medical and the hospital system it’s part of, Dayton-based Premier Health Partners.

Among the hospital’s major focuses in the year ahead are quality, safety and patient experience; improving community health and wellness prevention; and building on established service lines such as cardiology, said Carol Turner, president and chief executive officer of Atrium Medical Center.

“I think you’re going to see increased visibility of Atrium and Premier Health, as a central part of the system, in 2013,” Turner said. She became CEO effective 2011.

“We know that people have choices for health care. We know that there are many places they can go. We want them to choose Atrium,” Turner said.

New programs have been introduced in the community, driven by changes hospital officials see coming down the pike with health care reform.

“There was a time when health care and hospitals were all about acute care — somebody’s sick, we need to take care of them right now. But part of our job and part of our role moving forward with health care is going to be on the screening, the education and the prevention piece of health care,” Turner said.

Atrium initiated the Warren County Safe Communities Coalition in April 2012. The group, a collaboration of the hospital, law enforcement, community and school leaders, the Warren County health department and insurances companies, promotes traffic safety with the goal of reducing traffic-related fatalities and through community education and outreach, according to Atrium.

In an attempt to reach out to the elderly population, the hospital started in September 2011 SLIP: a Senior Lifestyles & Injury Prevention Program. Last year, about half of all Warren County traumas were related to falls, hospital officials said.

“We started this in response to seeing high numbers of traumatic injuries relating to falls and secondarily, injuries related to motor vehicle accidents,” said Atrium spokeswoman Wendy Parks.

Hospital experts also conduct a series on women health topics.

These are examples of how “we’re becoming much more aggressive with our community outreach,” Turner said.

Hospital staff is collaborating with EMS squads on education. They’re meeting with people within the school systems to figure out what Atrium can do to help support health and wellness with kids. Atrium is meeting with community leaders to look at specific health concerns to see how the hospital can help provide screening, education or present on health and wellness topics, Turner said.

Meanwhile within the hospital walls, Atrium has added to cardiology services.

For example, cardiology-related procedures have been expanded to do electrophysiology studies of irregular heart rhythms. Electrophysiology tests a heart’s electrical activity and electrical pathways.

“We’ve really worked to expand our cardiac service line,” Turner said.

Atrium Medical is not just the Middletown community hospital anymore. Its service area encompasses Warren and Butler counties, including Springboro, Lebanon, Mason, Trenton, Monroe and West Chester and Liberty townships.
