$80K added to tab for water tank project

TRENTON —

An additional $80,000 in fixes is needed for the Ginger Ridge water tank in Trenton, city officials said.

Interior work to the roof of the tank will be funded through an Ohio Public Works Commission grant. City officials said it would be more cost effective and efficient to have the work done now while crews are on site painting the tower, rather than go through the rebidding process.

A $100,000 exterior painting contract was awarded to The George Kountoupes Painting Company in September. The company has been on site for about four weeks painting the tower. Exterior painting is typically done every 15 years, but it has been 17 years since the Ginger Ridge tank was last painted, Leichman said.

“We would probably have to revisit it in two years anyway, so we’re taking advantage while they are here,” Leichman said. “Timing is everything and we’re able to get all the work done through the grant money.”

Leichman said the one million-gallon steel tank was constructed in 1971.

Leichman said the original painting project was scheduled to take as many as six weeks. The additional work will extend the project by two weeks, but Leichman said the contractor is ahead of schedule.

“They may be able to get done sooner, but regardless, residents won’t notice any interruption in service,” Leichman said.
