LUCKNOW, India — At least 23 members of a wedding party have been killed after their bus collided with a truck in northern India.
Police spokesman Surendra Srivastava says 36 other passengers were injured in the pre-dawn crash Wednesday in Mainpuri district in Uttar Pradesh state.
Srivastava says the impact of the head-on collision was so great that 23 people died instantly.
The bride and groom were traveling separately in a car and escaped the crash, which occurred on a country road with no streetlights.
India, the world's second most populous nation, has the highest annual road death toll, according to the World Health Organization.
More than 110,000 people die each year in India in crashes caused by speeding, bad roads, overcrowding and poor vehicle maintenance, according to police.
