MONROE — Monroe Local Schools officials are seeking a new work space for the district’s central office personnel, to make way for the possibility of all-day kindergarten in 2010.

Schools can postpone the program for a year, she said, but Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli said she thinks it makes sense to move forward now.

“I believe that students benefit,” she said. “I think that they’ll be better prepared.”

The district is planning to relocate its central office staff soon from modular units behind the primary school on Macready Avenue to make space for more kindergarten classes.

“Numerous times we’ve looked at the old part of Lemon Monroe High School and of course that portion of the building is not in great shape and will probably be condemned once Butler Tech is out of that building,” Lolli said.

Butler Tech’s lease is scheduled to expire in 2012, but the school expects to vacate the building next fall, she said.

“So that means we could put something in the 1966 building if we need to,” she said, referring to the part of the school built that year.

Besides the old high school building, Lolli said the district has also looked at either renting or purchasing property.

“We’re looking at whatever is the cheapest for the school district: lease or purchase. And of course we’ve ruled out using our own property because we don’t have anything that is possible to use,” Lolli said.

The three modular units currently housing the central office will be turned into at least five classrooms for second-graders, and maybe classrooms for art and music next year; some classes from the primary school will move into the modular units and kindergarten classes in turn would be housed in the primary building, she said.

Which specific students will be moved from the primary school has not been decided, she said.

Lolli said the district could reach a decision about where the central office will move by the end of this month.
