The National Weather Service declared the latest winter storm over Wednesday, Feb. 10, canceling the winter storm warning for Southeast Ohio.

Although no more snow is on its way the rest of the week, what is here will stay as temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, according to meteorologists with the NWS’s Wilmington office.

As snow showers diminished to flurries across the region, by 4 p.m. Wednesday the National Weather Service called off the winter storm warning. Although winds had picked up, they, too are expected to gradually decrease, though weather forecasters added that snow blowing would continue but should not pose significant visibility restrictions.

Still, drivers are urged to continue to use caution.

“There are still some icy or slushy spots” on Interstate 75 and other freeways said Sharon Smigielski, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation, who said crews would still be working Wednesday and early today. “The wind is blowing the snow back over the road and we expect temperatures to drop into the teens overnight.”

ODOT crews use a combination of road salt and calcium chloride in colder weather because it is more effective, said Smigielski.

As of Wednesday night, Butler and Warren counties remainsed under a Level I snow emergency, meaning that roadways are hazardous.

Overall, road conditions Wednesday were better than the day before, and dispatchers from the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said they have not been sent out on many accident calls.

Still, wrecks did occurring throughout the area, including a rollover crash that injured two people just before 4 p.m. along Morning Sun Road in Oxford.

Now, local road crews are preparing for the next battering of wintry weather. A storm is expected to hit the region Sunday, possibly dropping a few more inches of snow.
