Visitors perplexed by lack of trash cans in state park

Hot Topics

MASSIE TWP., Warren County — Chris and Denise Jasek were unpleasantly surprised to learn on Friday, July 3, there was nowhere to leave their trash after picnicking near the beach at Caesar Creek State Park.

My wife and I hike the Cesar Creek trails twice a week and have seen several dumps where boaters and picknickers are leaving their non finished lunches on the grounds. But the lack of trash cans and dumpsters is a proud welcome for travlers from out of state. Come on Dead Strickland, man up and cut outlandish Bureaucratic saleries. Make the Ohio State Parks a thing of beauty, as have past Governors.

I am an avid camper and hiker and have enjoyed our state parks all my life. But I was under the impression that trash collection at Caesar Creek and Cowan Lake had already ceased a decade ago. The last several times I have visited either park they have both been absolutely disgusting. I actually grew up with Cowan Lake in my backyard and it wasn't like that 30 years ago.

Pulling trash cans from any public place displays absolute incompetence! If there's not money for trash collection costing 53k, then either shut down the park, or cut in other places such as mowing or bureaucrat’s salaries! The park is going to turn into a dump for sure.

Hey Sorry.... who the hell signs the budget? STRICKLAND, he is responsible since he is at the top! Let's see what else he can invent to destroy the state. He is STRICLY foolish! Now let's kill Ohio's healthcare and extort money from the hospitals to participate in the Medicaid/Medicare program.

Why would you leave your trash for someone else to pick up? Is it a problem for you to take your trash home? What's wrong with that? Unfortunately, too many people are pigs and teach that mentality to their kids. Don't expect someone else to pick up after you. Do it yourself. Don't litter. Be mature. The State is trying to spend what's left of your tax dollars wisely. "Pack it in, pack it out" is something you can do to help.

As A retired employee from Ohio DNR,and living in Fl.You don't know how good you have it.The Florida state goverment just raised Park admission to 3-5 dollars a car depending on which Park you visit. You should be glad that Ohio Parks are still Free. The least you could do is take your trash home with you or as Smokey Bear says"Leave it as you found it".

Why can't they put dumpsters at the entrance/exit with a large sign informing people of the new policy. Folks really don't want to take home their smelly/slimy trash after a day at the park.

A lot of people didn't use the trash cans anyway! I have always taken along a trash bag or grocery sack to pick stuff up. Now I just throw it in the back and put it in the trash can when I get home. You can blame EPA for the number of Canadian Geese - they require retention ponds everywhere, so more habitat for the nasty geese. And what is up with you Grandma Sue? I want all the perverts in my neighborhood registered so I can protect my granchildren from them, don't you?

if you bring the trash in, you can carry it out. it isn't that hard and it weighs less then it did when you lugged it in. I for one am glad the state is trying to cut spending. I just wish they would cut some of the big ticket things as aggressively as they are the little things. as for the goose poop that is easy to fix and would help the budget also. sell stamps for $5, for every stamp you have you can kill one of those disgusting things.

I won't be going back to Ceasar's Creek Beach anytime soon. It was so gross. I was wondering were all the trash cans were.

It doesn't give people the right to leave trash just because there are no trash cans but it gives people enough of an excuse that many will.

Many state parks charge a small fee to use their beaches. I would rather do that and not be grossed out than to go in the mess that I saw when there!

OH MY GAWD!
Last Monday *6-09* was my last day of vacation so we let my son choose what he wanted to do. We wanted KI but he wanted to go to the beach (meaning Ceasers Creek) So we went there with sand toys and planned on spending the whole late afternoon evening there (around 3pm) I was grossed out by every few feet cigarette butts , and every 5-10 steps goose poop (or some kind of feces) I managed to last for about 1/2 hour or so then we went to Kings Island. Avoid for now... its disgusting

The State of Ohio and its Counties spend over ten million dollars registering DECADES OLD sex offenders ANNUALLY. Those not living where they say they are end up in prison at a cost of $33,000 per year - racking up millions more! To exacerbate things, Ohio Lawmakers enact even more S/O laws. Why is anyone perplexed by drastic spending cuts to critical services while we waste money "registering" people?

I'm so tired of hearing the "What do I pay my taxes for" response. You pay your taxes so the parks can remain safe (via park security and staff), so hiking trails, beaches, picnic tables and shelters, and other public-use facilities can be well-maintained, and so you have a restroom to do your business and a dock for your boat. I could go on. Don't act like ALL your state taxes go to pay for garbage disposal at state parks. Gimme a break.
Sigh

Tax Payer, maybe the taxes are being shifted toward pubic education so people won't have to sound like you when they write.
Huh?

The trash-free parks idea is nothing new. It's been used by the National Park Service at the C&O Canal National Historical Park and by the NPS at Prince William Forest Park in Virginia, among other areas, almost all of which get more visitation than an Ohio state park.

Be an adult - pick-up after yourself. Do you need state employees to be your nanny?

I recently moved to Dayton from San Antonio and at Padre Island National Seashore the trash problem is primarily maintained by park visitors. A large dumpster is placed at the exit to the park and it is custom for many park patrons to fill up a trash bag of garbage before they leave the park(due to boats from other countries dumping trash overboard and it floating onshore). Also there is an annual trash pick up and many park patrons from across the state show up to clean the beach.

sorry to spoil your fun but the trash pick-up idea is the brainchild of a house republican.

Please don't turn this political--all that's going to happen is a whole bunch of negativity and back stabbing by BOTH parties---why do things have to be so nasty? Can't we agree to disagree???
Please Stop

trashman, weren't you taught to clean up after yourself? there is nothing wrong with doing that.

so what you're saying is that republicans are to important to pick up after themselves and they need some lowly person that they are so much better than to do it for them?

this republican/democratic bashing is getting OLD. we are all trying to come up with ways to save our country.
so what you're saying trashman

Yes...imagine the money saved when Strickland and his staff personally go out and pick up all the trash! LOL!!
Now that would be a sight!!

Do they at least have signs posted to pick up your own trash???

Ok... let's say we save $53,000 dollars by not having trash cans/collection in state parks AND we expect all visitors to the parks to be responsible and bag their own trash. Hmmmm.... I wonder how that will go? I predict there will be litter throughout all parks and then the state will hire staff to pick up trash at a cost far exceeding the $53,000 savings. What a brain child idea! Let's applaud demodunce Strickland!

I have been there and this is all exaggerated. The area is clean and as un-American as it may seem to some, picking up your own trash, maybe it is not such a bad idea. Most people I know who love camping and parks tend to appreciate them enough not to litter. I can bring a trash bag, no problem.
