MONROE — The community’s new Vintage Base Ball team is conducting a breakfast fundraiser next month to purchase uniforms and baseball equipment.
The Monroe Golden Lads 1869-era team breakfast is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 24, in the James Monroe Community Room, located in the back of the city’s administrative offices, 233 S. Main Street.
The breakfast menu will include pancakes, said the Red Onion Cafe, the sponsor of the event.
Tickets are $7 at the door.
Any high school graduate interested in participating on the team should attend an organizational meeting scheduled at 2 p.m. on April 11, at the first gazebo in the Community Park, 500 S. Main Street, said Gene Williams, the treasurer of the Monroe Historical Society, which is sponsoring the team.
The team’s first game of the season will be played on May 1 at the Community Park followed by a doubleheader on May 22 against the Cincinnati Red Stockings Baseball Team.
The Monroe Golden Lads, which is named after the first Monroe school baseball team in the community back in the 1800s, is being formed so that it can become a member of the Vintage Base Ball Association this year, Williams said.
It is expected to officially begin playing the association’s schedule in 2011, he said.
