Bishop Fenwick senior wins essay contest

Bishop Fenwick High School senior, Kendra Battin, daughter of Vicki Battin (Miamisburg) and Michael Battin (Renton, Washington), has been awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award that promotes dependability, service, leadership and patriotism among high school seniors. The essay contest was sponsored by the Colonel Jonathan Bayard Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) based in Middletown. The Ohio Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (OSDAR) sponsors several contests to promote their mission of historic preservation, education and patriotism.

Kendra was invited to participate in a written essay contest after being chosen by school leaders based on criteria assigned from the DAR: dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. Each participant wrote a timed essay on a topic given the day of competition. They were judged on the basis of their essay, along with their grades, activities, letters of recommendation and honors. The topic chosen for this contest was “What are the biggest challenges or crisis facing America today?”

At Fenwick, Kendra is active in the Drama and Spanish Club. She is a Student Fenwick Ambassador and active with Fenwick for Life, the pro-life organization at Bishop Fenwick High School. She also works in a nursing home in Miamisburg and tutors at her church—The Church of the Latter Day Saints in Kettering. Kendra plays piano in her spare time and will be continuing her education at Brigham Young University in Hawaii studying International Cultural Studies with an emphasis on Anthropology.

Winners from throughout the State of Ohio will be submitted to the State-wide Contest, then on to a National Level.
