The Monroe Local Schools a cappella choir has something to sing about.

The Monroe High School Choral Boosters raised $5,663 through group projects and donations made by the administration, some teachers and community members to purchase 45 new choir robes, said Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli. The robes cost $125 each.

“We wanted to buy 60 and we got enough money to buy 45, and right now the choir has 33 kids in it, so we’re good,” she said.

The district sought donations because the a cappella choir does not have choir robes for competitions and formal concerts. Instead, Lolli said the choir members wear dark pants and white tops.

To raise funds, use of Lolli’s press box at the football stadium for one game was auctioned off, which raised $101. The Szydel family donated the money for use of the press box at the last home game of the season against Northridge.

The Monroe Lending Library also raised more than $300 for the effort during its quarter auction in October and the choral boosters ran a concession stand at the event, which raised another $150 for the cause, she said.

Lolli said if Choir Director Mark Jauss can get the robes ordered before Christmas, he might be able to roll the new robes out during the Ohio Music Educators Association Large Group Contest in March.

“It just depends how long it takes to get them made,” she said.

Lolli said the district plans to keep raising funds to purchase more robes.

Anyone interested in making a donation may send checks made out to Monroe Local Schools to 231 Macready Ave., Monroe, OH 45050. For more information, call (513) 360-0711.
