MIDDLETOWN — Police are searching for the person responsible for stuffing five, six-week-old puppies into a duffle bag and leaving them in an alley on Hill Avenue.

The duffle bag was discovered by a woman driving down the alley on Wednesday, April 28, when she almost ran over it with her car. She avoided the bag, which was zipped closed, after seeing that it was moving, according to a news release from the Animal Friends Humane Society.

She stopped immediately and called police after finding the five shepherd-mix puppies inside.

Officer Liz Lucas, Middletown’s animal control officer, took the abandoned puppies to the Humane Society where they are reported to be doing well. They animals will be available for adoption in the coming weeks, shelter officials said.

Lucas said the incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed yet.

“Situations like this are unnecessary when there are so many other options,” Lucas said in the news release. “The investigation is ongoing, and we hope to find the subjects responsible for this act of cruelty.”

Humane Society officials expressed their outrage over what they described as “the latest animal cruelty case in Butler County.”

A Hamilton man was convicted of misdemeanor abandonment and animal abuse charges in a similar case last month when he dumped a pregnant dog on a St. Clair Twp. farm to give birth in frigid weather.

“We are so glad someone found them before it was too late,” said Meg Stephenson, Executive Director for Animal Friends Humane Society. “We have operating hours every day to accommodate Butler County residents. There is no excuse for this cruel act.”

Anyone with information may call Lucas at 513-425-7700 or Stephenson at 513-435-1749 or 513-867-5005.
