MIDDLETOWN — Two men were able to escape after a propane heater in the basement of a Middletown home set storage items on fire.
Middletown firefighters responded at about 7:52 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, to a report of a fire in the basement at 2206 Woodlawn Ave.
Deputy Chief Brent Dominy said a resident and friend turned on a propane heater in the basement for warmth as they worked to restart a broken furnace. But when they turned on the heater, there was an emission from an accumulation of propane that created a fireball and ignited items stored nearby.
No injuries were reported but the blaze caused an estimated $10,000 in structural damage and $1,000 in damage to contents, Dominy said.
He said the local chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the resident.
