Through a partnership with Miami University’s regional campuses, Chinese students from the Communications University of China’s Nanjing Campus this month are studying the Voice of America, past, present and future, with an emphasis on the Bethany Relay Station in the Voice of America Park.

They are putting together a documentary that will be edited in China and broadcast in Nanjing, which has a population of six million. It also will be shared with the local community through TV West Chester.

Along with the information they have gleaned on the topic, students said they also have learned about American culture.

“We want to know about what is America,” said Zhu Yujie, 21, a game design major who said she came to the United States to learn more about the technology available.

She said she was impressed by the clean air and environment.

Communications major Liu Lu, 22, said she was especially impressed by the camera technology and equipment for broadcast, which was borrowed from TV West Chester.

“I think the people here are so happy and friendly,” she said.

Students spent several days touring and interviewing area officials at the Voice of America Learning Center and museum the week of Sept. 21 as part of their American Experience workshop and tour. They also visited Miami’s Middletown, Hamilton and Oxford campuses in addition to other points of interest in southwestern Ohio.

Their visit is part of the International Initiatives program of Miami’s regional campuses. Chen Fergusun, business professor, said the program will continue to expand to create exchange programs between Miami students and several universities in China and around the world. There are 700 Chinese students at Oxford this year, she said. The programs will be open to all Miami students despite language proficiency.

“I think the desire to do international education is more important than the language,” she said.
