MIDDLETOWN — If three local men are lucky enough, the Doritos commercial they made for a Super Bowl contest will be broadcast during the big game.

And, they’ll get a message out about the hazards of mixing Doritos and romance.

The commercial was directed by Joseph Bargdill of Middletown and Brian Tarbox of Carlisle. It stars Richard Riddell, also of Carlisle. They submitted their 30-second spot to the Crash the Super Bowl contest sponsored by Doritos. The winning commercial will be shown during the game, and six semi-finalists will win $25,000.

As of Wednesday, Dec, 23, the locally made commercial, called “Blind Date,” was the fifth most-viewed video out of more than 4,000 submissions, according to the site at www .crashthesuperbowl.com. A panel of experts will pick the winning submission from the most viewed commercials, Tarbox explained.

After they heard about the contest, “We got together, had some brainstorming sessions and threw around some ideas and said, ‘Why don’t we do a blind date?’” said Riddell.

The commercial, shot in Miamisburg in the fall, shows Riddell picking up his blind date, unaware that he has a very small piece of Dorito stuck to the side of his face. His date, aghast at his appearance, begins to find the Dorito more attractive than him. The girl is played by Angela Timpone of Dayton.

“I wanted to have confidence and swagger, but I’ve got a Dorito stuck to the side of my face,” Riddell said.

Facing an equally daunting challenge, Tarbox and Riddell had to edit down hours of raw footage into a mere 30 seconds — and even now, Tarbox still wants to tinker with it.

“For me, even when you have the final cut, I go back and say ‘I could have done this different.’ If I had my way I’d probably change it tomorrow.”

However, as Riddell put it, “Over 30,000 views is pretty good for four people putting together a video.”

Hey, that's cool! Good luck! I know the Riddell family and they're pretty good people.
