MIDDLETOWN — Middletown’s Legends of Rock concert series will roll again in 2012.
The concerts, which bring tribute bands to Governor’s Square Park at Central Avenue and Broad Street, will continue alternating Wednesdays with the Broad Street Bash.
While the Legends shows haven’t gotten the volume of the Bashes, which draw thousands downtown, they did perform well enough to give them another go-round next year, said Adriane Scherrer, one of the founders of the event.
There is one final Legends of Rock show, slated for Aug. 17, when the Allman Brothers tribute band No Saints No Saviors will play.
Two of the concerts were rained out, so “the weather played havoc on us ... sometimes it was so hot, people didn’t come out,” said Gregg Coulter, who books the Legends of Rock bands. He also is a member of the Guns n’ Roses tribute, Use Your Illusion — another show that got rained out.
Still, Scherrer estimated that each show drew between 600 and 1,000, which she and Coulter consider a good start.
“I’d call it a success. Most first-year events go in the hole, but we broke even,” Coulter said.
Scherrer said she did notice a significant difference between the crowds for the Bash and the crowds for Legends of Rock. The Broad Street Bash is a big party where people go to see each other as much as they do the bands. For Legends of Rock, however, the emphasis is very much on the music.
“At the Bash they come not only to hear the bands but to socialize. It’s like a big family reunion. People come to Legends of Rock for the music. They love Iron Maiden and they don’t buy as much food or as much beer per person,” Scherrer said.
All that said, however, both concert series are a draw, so both will be sticking around next year, alternating Wednesdays again.
“Both deserve to have their concerts, so we will be continuing next year,” Scherrer said. Coulter added that he’s looking for sponsors, who can call him at (513) 891–7025.
Also playing at the Aug. 17 show are the finalists of Middletown’s recent Miami Valley Idol 3 contest, backed by the band the Vinyl Junkies.
