Journal moves to new downtown site

MIDDLETOWN — It was important for The Middletown Journal to remain in the city, and for the newspaper to vacate the former Cinergy Building, said Edwina Blackwell Clark, publisher of The Middletown Journal.

Located at 1 N. Main St. for about three years, the Journal is moving down the street to 300 N. Main St., Suite 600, starting Monday. The Journal will share the building with First Financial Bank, The Middletown Area United Way and the Middletown Community Foundation. The Journal will be located on the second floor.

Blackwell Clark said the newspaper “is committed to coverage of this city and this region.”

The move also will allow Cincinnati State College, once an agreement has been signed with the city, to occupy the building at 1 N. Main St.

Since the newspaper was founded on Jan. 12, 1857, as the Western Journal and later renamed The Middletown Journal, its offices have been located downtown.

In 1857, the paper was printed in a room in the Odd Fellows Building on South Main Street. In 1879, the paper moved two doors south to the Evans building before moving into a new two-story brick building on Canal Street. On Feb. 12, 1914, a fire gutted the building on Canal Street. In 1919, the building was demolished to make way for the Reed-Kloop building.

The Journal then moved to a building at what is now Verity Parkway and First Avenue.
