MIDDLTOWN - The Middletown Board of Education has approved a contract with incoming Interim Superintendent Norris Brown and picked a consulting firm to lead the search for a permanent leader.
The board on Tuesday, July 14, unanimously approved a contract for Brown, who will start July 27 prior to outgoing Superintendent Steve Price’s last day.
Brown comes in with six years experience in Middletown as a prior interim superintendent and director of pupil personnel services.
“I like the district. I like the community,” Brown said. “I really enjoyed the years that I worked there.”
Brown said he will work on improving student academic achievement, address the school environment and learn the district’s finances.
“We’re just going to go in every day and work as hard as we can to improve the academics of our students,” he said.
The board also chose Boston-based Carney, Sandoe and Associates to lead the search for a permanent superintendent in a 3-2 vote, reflecting a desire for an “active” search.
Board President Greg Tyus and Vice President Katie McNeil voted against the hiring after a discussion that ended in a quibble.
The district will pay a base fee of $30,000 plus expenses for Carney to run the search, which is down from the original $40,000 minimum or one-third of the salary.
The board will meet with Barry Rowland from Carney either the last week of July or the first week of August to set up a time line for the search.
