Six petitions are out for Carlisle’s City Council elections this year, more than a month before petitions are due.

“That sounds like a pretty good number of candidates to me,” said Keir Holeman, Warren County Board of Elections director.

Four of the seven positions in Carlisle’s council are open, Wards 1, 2, 3 and one at-large seat.

The following have taken out petitions as of Friday, July 3:

• Chad Johnson of Beachler Drive for at-large;

• Cheryl Sweezy of Joshua Court for at-large;

• Bryan Green of Meadowlark Drive for Ward 1;

• Incumbent Mary Thompson for Ward 1, who has served five terms;

• Scott Boschert of Roberts Court for Ward 2; and

• Incumbent Randal Winkler of Janet Avenue for Ward 3, who has served two terms.

Dennis Bowles, the councilman for the open at large seat, said he hasn’t decided about running. And Carry Branson, who represents the 2nd Ward, said she doesn’t intend to seek re-election.

In addition, Carlisle Mayor Tim Humphries plans to run for Warren County commissioner.

Nearby in Franklin, three petitions are out, according to the Board of Elections. All Franklin council positions are at-large and three of the seven seats are open, including mayor.

Steven Burggraf of Gorsuch Road, Doug Greathouse of Sixth Street and incumbent Carl Bray, who is vice mayor and served two terms on council, have petitions out.

Mayor Denny Centers, who has served one term as mayor, two terms as vice mayor and three terms on council, said he plans to run. The other incumbent up for re-election, Michael Aldridge, didn’t respond as of Friday about his intent.

The only other city in Warren County with more petitions out than Carlisle is Springboro. Also, there are four petitions out for Carlisle Local Schools’ Board of Education.

After the Aug. 20 deadline for petitions, the election board will certify which candidates are on the ballot, said Holeman.
