Hospital opens with new medical staff on board

The following is a list of people appointed to various lead posts within the new West Chester Medical Center. The hospital will open for business in May 11.

Carol King is the senior vice president of West Chester Medical Center and has more than 30 years of health care leadership experience. She most recently served as the senior vice president of operations at Grant Medical Center in Columbus. Prior to that role, she was the vice president of emergency medicine services for the Health Alliance.

King has also has held various administrative positions at Mercy Health Partners and Franciscan Health System. She earned a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Xavier University, a Master’s of Science degree in nursing administration from the University of Cincinnati and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in nursing from the College of Mount St. Joseph. She is a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives and is certified in nursing administration advanced by the American Nurse Credentialing Center.

Dr. Pradeep Bekal has been named medical director of gastroenterology. He currently is in private practice with both Ohio Gastroenterology & Liver Institute and Consultants for Clinical Research.

Bekal completed his Bachelor’s of Medicine and Surgery degree at Madras Medical School, India, and completed his residency in internal medicine at New York Methodist Hospital, where he was chief resident.

In addition to general gastroenterology, he specializes in advanced endoscopic procedures including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic ultrasound and real-time EUS-guided biopsies. Bekal lives in Sycamore Twp.

Dr. Mohamed Effat was named medical director of the cardiology department at the West Chester Medical Center.

“Cardiology has made extraordinary advances, but those advances are only as important as the difference they make in people’s lives,” Effat said in a press release from the Health Alliance.

“As director of cardiology at West Chester Medical Center, I am committed to building a leading heart program to provide the best in patient care. Patients can count on the combined experience of our team for all their heart needs.”

Effat is the co-director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at University Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology and nuclear cardiology.

Effat lives in Liberty Twp.

Dr. Naveed Fazlani is Vice President of Medical Affairs at the West Chester Medical Center.

In this role, he will be the senior hospital physician and will act as liaison between administration and medical staff. He will support safety, quality and service excellence, as well as providing leadership in medical staff performance and effectiveness.

Dr. Fazlani has previously been a faculty member of the department of internal medicine at University Hospital. He coordinated care at Hopple Street Medical Center in a joint venture involving Alliance Primary Care, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Babies Milk Fund and the community of North Fairmont. He has also provided care in rural areas through his private practice in Wilmington. Dr. Fazlani currently has a full time internal medicine practice in Mt. Healthy, Midwest Medical Group, which he co-founded in 2003.

Dr. Fazlani’s management experience includes serving as Associate Medical Director at Mercy Hospital Mt. Airy; Area Medical Director for TRICARE Heartland Region 5, and Medical Director of Internal Medicine for Hopple Street Health Center.

A Cincinnati resident, Fazlani is married and has two children.

Dr. Elliott Fegelman is the Department Director of Surgery at the West Chester Medical Center. He is responsible for the direction and oversight of all surgery related activities to include quality assurance, physician recruitment and retention, new program development and oversight of delineation of privileges and credentialing of all new surgeons.

Fegelman has been with the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati for two decades, and is currently the Director of Surgery and Surgical Residency Program Director at The Jewish Hospital, which is also a member of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati. He will continue to serve in that role in conjunction with his duties at WCMC.

With special interest in minimally invasive approaches to surgical disease, including colon cancer, surgical treatment of obesity and breast disease, Fegelman is the senior partner of Cincinnati General Surgeons, Inc. He is the president of the Alliance Partners board of directors, and sits on the boards of the Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati and Alliance Physicians and Surgeons.

Dr. Lesley Gilbertson was named the Medical Director of Anesthesia Services of the West Chester Medical Center.

She is also a member of the Physician Advisory Council for new hospital and is currently the medical director of University Pointe Surgical Hospital in West Chester Twp. and chair of the UPSH medical executive committee.

In addition, she is a member of the UC Physicians/Health Alliance Board of Directors for UPSH, and serves as associate professor of clinical anesthesia at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She also continues to practice as a staff anesthesiologist at The University Hospital and University Pointe Surgical Hospital.
