Highland district part of new tour

MIDDLETOWN — A new holiday homes tour makes its debut in Middletown this year, spotlighting the Highlands Historic District near the former site of Middletown Regional Hospital.

The tour will welcome guests to six homes and the Church of the Ascension, all decorated for the holiday season, said Jeff Michel, the president of that district.

The tour will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6. Presale tickets are $12 and are available at Beauverre Riordan Studio on Central Avenue at Broad Street and at Middletown Arts Center, 130 N. Verity Parkway.

Tickets bought on the day of the event will be $15 per person at Church of the Ascension.

For many years, homes in Middletown’s historic district on Main Street have opened their doors to holiday tours, but that tour operates every other year. This new tour will alternate years with the Main Street tour, Michel said.

The Church of the Ascension, at 2709 McGee Ave., will serve as the ticket office and starting point. It will present a brief bell concert during tour hours. Both Hanukkah and Christian displays will be presented in the homes.

What will make the new tour distinct from the South Main one is that the homes from the Highland tour were built in the 20th century, whereas the homes on South Main Street tend to be older and Victorian in style.

“This is more the Santa Claus/Coca-Cola version (of Christmas),” Michel said.

Proceeds will go toward the programs and projects of the Highlands Historic District committee.

Kristen Mulligan, who helps organize the tours on South Main, said residents there are anticipating the new tour.

“I think most of the people on the street are looking forward to going on a tour rather than holding one,” she said.

Merrell you will never change! Not only do I NOT live across from your chuch, I have no idea where you attend chuch (if you do.) It appears that we can just chalk your comment up to another instance of you spouting off before you know what you're talking about. And get something straight Merrell, my remarks/opinions are just as "called for" as yours...probably more so, were I to ask the person who actually lives across the street from your church! You have a wonderful day too Merrell!

Mr.T, Lighten up. We all know that any funds raised can and should be used for whatever purpose you desire. It was just a well intentioned suggestion. As to you reply; "you have no right to even suggest," the use of tour funds, I hope I don't have to get your permission to drive through the neighborhood or attend my church across the street from you home. If you care to use your full name, we can have a discussion as to what you can do with your truly uncalled for remarks. Have a nice day.

Can't believe anyone could go out of there way to slam a group of positive thinking people who only really want to enjoy the holidays with other people. I'm lucky enough to know most of these folks, who by the way give back more to this community then most people will ever know.Should stay on this topic but when Mr. Wood has to grab a headline i laugh. Great park board meeting last night.I no your reason 4 not being there, sorry but the show must go on.Leadership Mr.Wood focus on 1thing its hard.

Still angry about the Hook mansion fiasco I see Merrell. Whether those people choose to give the proceeds of this tour to charity, is their business, not yours. You have no right to even suggest what they (or anyone else) should do with the money they raise, anymore than they have a right to suggest what you should do with yours.

Mr. Woods has a good idea. With only six houses to be open in the whole "Highland District," why not give the proceeds to a food pantry?
