HAMILTON — The Butler County Community Health Consortium will host health fairs Saturday, Aug. 15, as part of National Community Health Center Week.
The health fairs will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ernst J. Bever Center, 210 S. 2nd St. in Hamilton. And in Middletown from 1 to 5 p.m. at Douglass Park.
Participants can get Body Mass Index checks, a measure of body fat based on height and weight, nutrition and wellness information, sign up for back to school physicals, win prizes and games will be available for kids.
Guest speaker at the Hamilton event will be Ohio Department of Health Director Dr. Alvin D. Jackson.
He will discuss the role nutrition plays in healthy living and the importance of community health centers.
Jackson said public health centers such as those in the county health consortium are key in this sagging economy because they provide medical care to the uninsured and regardless of a patients ability to pay and
“Typically, these health centers provide not only preventive and primary health care but also mental health and oral health services.’’
National Community Health Center Week is held annually during the second week of August.
This year is especially important, National Association of Community Health Centers officials said, because the organization is embarking on plans to serve 30 million people by 2015.
Nationwide, community health centers serve 18 million people.
Locally, the Hamilton and Middletown centers have served more than 1,700 through June and are on pace for another record year.
Because of the sagging economy, more residents are seeking public health facilities, said Butler County Community Health Consortium Director Marc A. Bellisario.
“We’re seeing more people who used to be insured or who at least once had insurance for their children coming to our centers,’’ he said.
