Monroe High School junior Kelli McCreight said she knows wearing the same dress to prom as another girl can be avoidable.
But when it comes to hair, everyone has their own style.
“Everybody remembers you for your hair,” said McCreight, a cosmetology student at Butler Technology and Career Develoment Schools.
“Even if the dress is the same, everybody’s hair is always different,” she said.
A fancy hairdo is staple of the prom look, but paying for the style can be an added stress on a budget that might already be covering a dress, accessories, ticket and dinner.
Cosmetology students at Butler Tech said it’s not difficult to do an at-home style that matches your dress.
“If your mom knows how to braid or curl, they can help you out,” said Shelby Lutz, a junior from Fairfield High School.
“If you have a pretty dress, you have to have pretty hair,” said Julie Berry, a junior from Edgewood High School.
“It finishes off your outfit,” said junior Kelly Wagner, a junior from Colerain High School. “It just tops everything.”
If you’re doing your own hair, Butler Tech students have these tips:
• Do not wash your hair the morning of the dance. The natural oils in your hair will help hold the style.
• Braiding hair the night before or starting with curling can add extra volume.
• Be sure to have all the supplies you might need including hair spray, bobby pins or clips, a flat iron or curling iron and hair accessories.
• When using hair spray, hold the bottle away from your head and be sure not to use too much, which can weigh down your style.
