MIDDLETOWN — The Recognition Awards Program, a million “Penny Crusade” fundraiser, will be held next month at the Bethel A.M.E. Church.
The fundraiser set for 6 p.m. Dec. 3, is for the Louella Thompson Dream Center, named for a woman with a personal conviction to eliminate hunger.
Special speakers and mentors working in the area will attend, and Nancy Morgan said that a minister in town will speak and lead the event held at the church, 1507 Yankee Road, Middletown.
The “Penny Crusade” is to show that if a dollar is donated, it’s equal to 100 pennies, and that donations of any size can help, Morgan said.
Morgan said she hopes to have a good turnout at the event, which also will “thank people in Middletown who deserve to be honored,” Morgan said.
The late Louella Thompson would use earnings from her beauty shop to feed those in need from her home. She also collected clothing for the needy. Thompson referred to her “Dream Center” idea as a crazy dream, but she was not alone; people in Middletown and surrounding areas rallied for her cause.
The Dream Center today is housed in a brick building on the vacant lot next to her home and beauty shop.
