Free, individualized math instruction is now being offered at Miami University Middletown.
Tutoring is available twice a week and is tailored to focus on the math skills each person needs.
Sessions are from 12:30 to 3 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday through July 31 in Johnston Hall Room 9 on the Middletown campus, 4200 E. University Blvd.
“Some individuals have trouble with just one area of math,” said Rose Marie Stiehl, principal of Middletown City Schools’ Adult Education Program.
“They may just have trouble with fractions, for example. With this program, the instruction would cover just that area, so students won’t have to spend time covering materials they have already mastered,” she said.
Equations are the trouble area for Margie Brantis, who has been struggling with a prealgebra class as she works toward a degree in psychology.
“I just cannot get past it,” Brantis said, as she completed a packet to help gauge what areas she needs support in.
Brantis said she’s hoping the free instruction will help her pass the math classes required for her major.
Anyone not currently enrolled in high school may participate in the program, which is made possible through a partnership between Miami University Middletown and Middletown’s Adult Basic and Literary.
A pre-test will determine which type of self-directed and teacher supported mathematics study the student will need during the summer program.
A post-test will help each student determine skills levels and any additional needs.
