Fireworks delayed until Sept. 5

Middletown will get fireworks this year — they just won’t be on the Fourth of July.

Street Lethal Motorsports, a business at 6249 Germantown Road that has been running car cruise-ins, had planned to have fireworks at the show scheduled for July Fourth.

The business secured the permits, but it was not able to find a fireworks company that wasn’t already booked for the holiday, said Marcus Martin, vice president of Street Lethal Motorsports.

“By the time we were able to get a permit, (the companies) didn’t have enough manpower,” Martin said.

However, rather than giving up on the fireworks, the business simply rescheduled them for another holiday weekend. The fireworks are now scheduled to run Saturday, Sept. 5, which is Labor Day weekend.

“The people of Middletown deserve a fireworks display, and we are going to give it to them,” Martin said.

The cruise-in still is on from 3 p.m. to midnight and will feature KITT from the TV show “Knight Rider” and the General Lee from “The Dukes of Hazzard.” There also will be music from the Josh Pilot Band and from DJ Mark Ballard. The event is held in honor of American soldiers, Martin said.

Tickets to that event are $7 per car with up to four people, $10 per car with five or more people, and $3 for motorcycles. Admission is free if arrival is before 5 p.m.

Middletown’s annual Fourth of July parade will start at 10 a.m., moving from Woodside Cemetery to Smith Park, said Jenny Wills, who helps organize the event.

The grand marshal will be Steve Grimes, an Air Force veteran from Middletown who often carries the POW/MIA flag in the parades. The minister will be the Rev. Eric Newell from the Breiel Boulevard Church of God. There will be an awards ceremony in Smith Park for parade floats at the end of the parade.

AGAIN I SAY...

RALLY'S ON VERITY...(every Saturday night) has been doing this for several months now and has a terrific turnout every week. It is VERY kid/family friendly, with treats for the kids and food discounts for the owners of the cars. They don't have to advertise on the journal or on signs throughout the city. Just word of mouth..and it's a lot of fun. They also don't make promises they can't keep (fireworks).

You are so true rallygal, although before they start advertising that those popular cars will be at this cruise-in they may want to check with the owners and make sure that they are really going to be there. I heard that the "KITT" car is broke down and the "GENERAL LEE" just might not want to come because they didn't ask their permission to advertise there car.

Thanks Street Lethal, Appreciate the car show and the fireworks. There is an option to having the fireworks on the 4th if manpower is the issue. If we can persuade the city council and school board members to set them off (no training of course) your manpower problem is solved. BOOM!!!!
