MONROE — City Council said goodbye to fellow councilman and vice-mayor Steve Tannreuther on Tuesday, Dec. 8, during its last meeting of the year.
Tannreuther, 55, a Middletown native and longtime resident of Monroe, was seeking his third, four-year term on City Council when he was defeated in the November general election by political newcomer Todd Hickman. He was serving his fourth year as vice mayor.
Mayor Robert Routson presented him with a plaque thanking him for his many years of service to the city.
“You did a great job. We’re going to miss you. Come back and see us,” he told Tannreuther.
Tannreuther thanked all the council members, administrative staff and his wife, Rita, at the end of the meeting and wished Hickman good luck.
He said he is definitely going to miss serving the community, though he said he let Routson and his fellow council members know that he would be available to serve on any committee.
“It’s been a great experience. It really has. I’ve met a lot of great people and there’s a lot of great people in the community,” Tannreuther said, adding that he is especially going to miss the people and interaction he has had while serving on council.
“We (council) have butt heads in the eight years that I’ve been here. We’ve argued, we’ve screamed, we’ve yelled, but it’s never been in the public. We’ve always kept a good decorum up here and just worked extremely well together. I learned a lot up here that way.”
Tannreuther graduated from the old Lemon Monroe High School in 1972 and retired as a supervisor from AK Steel Corp. in 2005.
Tannreuther said it also has been an honor serving especially coming onto council right after his dad, Elbert, retired.
“So Jan. 1, 2010, will be the first time in 36 years without a Tannreuther sitting up here on council,” he said.
His father served on council from 1973-1987 and as mayor from 1987-2001, according to a monument dedicated to his dad in front of the city building.
