TRENTON — Edgewood City Schools administrators announced Wednesday, March 17, they will partner with the Butler County Educational Services Center for their upcoming superintendent search.
The search will officially begin Friday, according to Dan Hare, Butler County ESC superintendent, who will be facilitating the process.
All applications will be sent to Hare, who will prepare them for the Board of Education to review.
“My role is to lead discussions on what qualities they are looking for in their candidates,” Hare said. “I do make all the interview appointments and help develop a list of questions. However, I am not a head hunter and I have no role in deciding who the next superintendent will be.”
Hare said he is working with the board to have the job brochure and application ready to post on the Edgewood and ESC Web sites by Friday morning. The job posting also will be sent to universities, placement services, education professional services, as well as a mass e-mail to superintendents and principals around the state.
Current Edgewood Superintendent Larry Knapp announced his retirement to the board in December, effective July 31. The board said it hopes to have a new district leader in place by Aug. 1.
It is uncertain how many candidates may apply by the April 30 deadline, Hare said.
“There may be many people looking for the job because of the economy, but, on the other hand, there are probably superintendents who don’t want to pack up and move right now.”
Typically, 15 to 20 candidates apply for any superintendent vacancy.
The Butler County ESC is no stranger to being a search partner. In the past, the organization has worked with the Middletown, Monroe, Madison, Fairfield and Ross districts to find either superintendents or treasurers.
Hare said the charges for the search include any cost the ESC would incur on behalf of the Edgewood school board. Typical charges would be less than $500 for copying of candidate materials, binders and to assemble information for the board.
“We do not charge for my time or travel expenses as we believe this is a service we should offer to districts because we are long-standing partners,” he said.
Knapp announced his retirement to the school board during a December meeting. At the time, he said, “I’ve always been told that when the time came to retire, you would know. The time is right,” he said.
Knapp’s retirement is effective July 31, at the end of his contract, Knapp said. This would allow the board time to “do good research and get the next person in place.”
