FRANKLIN — A local research facility will be one of a handful of centers across the country performing clinical trials to test the safety and efficacy of a new vaccine for H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu.
Prestige Clinical Research at 333 Conover Drive Suite D is set to begin human trials mid-month, said Dr. Gary Bedel, principal investigator for Prestige. He said the center would be enrolling candidates for the trial through mid-September.
Bedel said there are two primary groups that will be targeted at the Franklin center: children ages 3 to 9 and adults 65 and older.
“We are trying to get as many people involved as possible,” Bedel said. “These are individuals who have no symptoms, but want to be vaccinated against the flu.”
Bedel says participants will be compensated for their time and travel. He said participants would be tracked for two months after the vaccine is administered to evaluate its effects.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is one of eight centers nationwide chosen by the NIH to test two experimental vaccines for H1N1, also known as swine flu.
