WEST CHESTER TWP. — The Mayfield Clinic is expanding its Precision Radiotherapy Center as part of a multimillion project that includes a new technology allowing doctors to simultaneously scan a patient’s body, brain and spine.
Precision Radiotherapy Center — a state-of-the-art radiotherapy/radiosurgery treatment center for people with cancer, benign tumors and other abnormalities — will double the size of its facility at 7710 University Court to 16,000 square feet.
Ground was broken in November for the $6.5 million project, which will boost the number of patients treated from 35 per day to 75, according to Mayfield spokeswoman Cindy Starr.
There are currently 13 staff and eight radiation oncologists working at Precision Radiotherapy Center, she said. The expansion will result in the hiring of five or six additional staff and will help area physicians whose patients live in Butler County and the surrounding area.
Precision Radiotherapy Center, which opened in 2003, is operated by the Mayfield Clinic and the University of Cincinnati Health’s department of radiation oncology. The project, which will be paid for by both entities, is scheduled to be completed by mid- to late summer, Starr said.
The TrueBeam technology was released this year, and Mayfield Clinic will be the first in the area to have the ability to use it, according to Dr. John Breneman, co-medical director of the Precision Radiotherapy Center and professor of radiation oncology at UC.
In addition to supporting radiosurgery and general radiotherapy capabilities, TrueBeam also provides Precision Radiotherapy Center with electron beam radiotherapy. Electron-beam radiotherapy is used primarily to combat tumors close to the surface of the body, including skin cancers, plus other abnormalities inside and outside the brain.
While the Mayfield clinic had focused primarily on treating brain tumors, the expansion and addition of the TrueBeam will allow the clinic to expand its scope into treating other forms of cancer, such as spinal and lung, Breneman said.
