MONROE — A local business advocacy group is dishing out a new event aimed at spicing up area networking.

The Chamber of Commerce Serving Middletown, Monroe and Trenton is scheduled to hold its inaugural chili cook-off for chamber members from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Pleasant Retirement Village, 27 Indiana Ave.

Firefighters from Middletown, Monroe and Trenton fire department will participate in the event, serve their own chili and announce the winners.

Each year, the chamber holds a business expo in Middletown and a steak fry in the Trenton area.

“We were looking to hold a major event in Monroe because we serve all three communities,” said Jennie Robe, membership director. “It provides a networking opportunity for our members, it highlights the fire departments in all three communities and it’s fun.”

The competition consists of 15 entries so far but the chamber continues to accept additional entrants, Robe said.

Chamber members may enter their chili recipe as “hot,” “mild” or “alternative,” which includes - but is not limited to - vegetarian, chicken and turkey chili, according to Ann Banks, office manager.

“Someone even asked about deer (chili),” Banks said. “It (alternative) is something other than the typical ground beer and beans.”

Brian Puckett of Mobile Music DJ Service will serve as deejay. Attendees will vote for their favorite entry and winners will be awarded prizes.

Cost for the event is $15 and payment must accompany each reservation. Call (513) 422-4551 for a registration form or visit tinyurl.com/feb15chili.
