HAMILTON — Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones is not usually known to keep to himself about his views on those seeking higher elected office.
He once took out a newspaper ad criticizing Arizona Sen. John McCain when the Republican nominee came through Cincinnati while running for president. He blasted state Sen. Jon Husted’s campaign for secretary of state at a fundraiser last year — right in front of him.
But Jones has found something he likes in Rob Portman’s candidacy for U.S. Senate, and has agreed to co-chair Portman’s law enforcement coalition.
“Rob Portman understands that we are a nation of laws and that fighting crime requires efforts at all levels of government,” Jones said. “I am proud to support his campaign for U.S. Senate.”
The coalition will work to build support for Portman’s campaign among law enforcement officers and prosecutors. Jones shares the job with co-chair Betty Montgomery, former state attorney general and auditor.
“(Montgomery and Jones) are long-serving members of Ohio’s law enforcement community, and I am grateful for their support,” Portman said. “The safety of our families and our communities has to come first, and every law enforcement professional throughout Ohio should be commended for their selfless dedication to our communities.”
Portman, former congressman and White House advisor, is the Republican front-runner in replacing retiring GOP Sen. George Voinovich.
